Tahiti Whale Watching Boat Tour

About This Experience
Tahiti by Boat runs this whale trip off Tahiti itself, so it suits you if you are staying on Tahiti and don't want to take the ferry to Moorea. The boat carries up to 12 passengers, and guides speak English, French and Portuguese. Hotel pickup is included only for bookings of four or more people (and for private tours of any size), from seven listed hotels: Hilton Hotel Tahiti, InterContinental Tahiti, Te Moana Tahiti Resort, Hotel Tahiti Nui, Hotel Sarah Nui, Royal Tahitien and Tahiti Lagoon Resort. Email the operator after booking to confirm your pickup, or, for smaller bookings, where to meet.
The crew searches for humpbacks and watches from the boat first. When conditions allow, guests go into the water in two small groups with a guide, taking turns; one guest describes a swim of about 100 meters in open water to reach a mother, calf and escort. The itinerary also lists snorkeling and dolphin watching, and the boat serves water, local fruit juice and fresh fruit. Morning trips start early, with guests mentioning meeting times between about 6:15 and 6:45 am.
At 4.0 from 89 reviews it rates below most whale tours on this site, and the low reviews share a few themes. Several guests describe late starts, from the crew or guide arriving 20 to 45 minutes after the meeting time to long waits for late passengers. Some say the trip ran about 3.5 to 4 hours when they expected 4.5 to 5. Others report rough seas and seasickness without warning, days with no swim or no whales, commentary mostly in French on English bookings, pickup mix-ups, and a second swim group that ran out of time before its turn.
The five-star reviews, which are the majority, praise the same guides for calm, respectful swims with mothers and calves, and one guest swam near five whales. Book it if you are based on Tahiti, swim well in open water and can live with an uneven track record. If getting to Moorea is easy for you, the higher-rated Moorea trips on this site are the steadier choice.
Prices start from $219 per person, and you can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.0/5 by 89 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
We went to watch whales which is never a guarantee but we were lucky to spot a whale with her child. Each group gets a 30 min swimming with them. If you have a go pro take it with you. The footage will be unforgettable

A great experience, and our guide was very knowledgeable, fun and caring, and made sure that everyone could keep up. I would only recommend the activity to people who are very proficient swimmers and who follow instructions. The only thing I can criticize is that you were supposed to be there by 6:15 at the latest, and our guide himself didn't arrive until 6:45. In this case, other information could certainly be provided in advance.

An incredible experience! The guides were very professional and respectful in their interactions with the whales. The boats do not chase the animals; everything happens in a very calm and relaxed manner, and a proper distance is actually kept from the animals. We had plenty of time to observe whales with calves from a distance, from the boat. Afterwards, we were divided into two small groups and allowed to take turns swimming into the water with a guide to the location where whales were thought to be. Here, too, there was plenty of time to observe two humpback whales.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this tour rated 4.0?
The lower reviews mostly describe late starts, trips shorter than expected, rough seas and seasickness without warning, days with no swim or no whales, commentary mainly in French, and pickup mix-ups. Most reviews are still five stars and praise the guides during the swims.
Is hotel pickup included?
Only for bookings of four or more people under one booking, or for private tours of any size, from seven listed hotels including the Hilton, InterContinental and Te Moana. Email the operator after booking to confirm it.
Can I swim with the whales?
If the whales and the sea allow. Guests go in two small groups with a guide, one after the other, and may need to swim about 100 meters in open water. A few guests say the second group ran out of time, and some trips had no swim at all.
Do I have to go to Moorea to see whales?
No. This trip runs off Tahiti. Humpbacks are seen off Tahiti's west coast as well as around Moorea, and the same rules on distances and swimmer numbers apply at both islands.
How long is the trip?
It is listed at 4 hours, with 4.5 hours of whale watching on the itinerary. A few guests say they were back after about 3.5 hours.
