Moorea Humpback Whale Tour: Watch or Swim

4.9 (327 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Enjoy Boat Tours Moorea runs this four-hour whale trip in two versions: one for swimmers, with six places, and one for observers who stay on board, with four places. It is the most-reviewed Moorea whale tour on this site, with a 4.9 rating from 327 reviews, and at $179 per person it is also the cheapest one here that includes the chance to swim.

Departures are at 8:00 am and 1:30 pm from the parking lot of the Coco Beach restaurant on Moorea's north coast, and the operator asks you to arrive 10 minutes early. The boat heads out beyond the reef to look for humpbacks, and the crew also watches for pilot whales and open-ocean sharks.

On the swim option, getting in the water depends on the sea state, the whales' behavior, the guide's assessment and the rules in force that day, and the final call rests with the captain and guide. Swimmers must wear the buoyancy vest provided, or a 3 mm neoprene wetsuit of their own, keep their distance from the whales and leave the water when the guide asks. After the whale search the trip ends with a snorkel in the lagoon among rays and blacktip reef sharks, in shallow water where you can stand.

The observer option suits non-swimmers and people who mainly want to watch, though one 3-star reviewer found the trip better for swimmers than for photographing whales from the boat. When booking, check that you have picked the right option, as reviewers point out that only one includes swimming. The listing asks for a high level of physical fitness, swimmers must be able to swim properly, and minors must be with a responsible adult.

Snorkeling gear, bottled water and a dry compartment are included; towels, sunscreen, a wetsuit and transport are not. Prices start from $179 per person. Viator lists free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, while the operator's own terms on the listing ask for cancellations 72 hours ahead, so read both before you book. The operator also gives no refund if you cut the trip short because of seasickness.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.9/5 by 327 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

What an awesome day so beautiful just being on the water! It was the end of the season but we were able to see a whale and her big baby. We got in the water a couple of times which was thrilling. However, mom wanted to keep her baby safe! Our guide and captain were incredible!! A highly recommended adventure!

Guides were excellent! Very knowledgeable and helpful. Beautiful to be on the ocean and even from the boat to see these magnificent creatures.

— Stephanie B, Aug 2026

Absolutely amazing experience. Still speechless. Worth every penny. Just make sure you pick the right option after choosing the time - there is one option that includes snorkeling and one that doesn’t.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the two options?

The swim option has six places and includes supervised entries into the water with the whales when conditions allow. The observer option has four places and you watch from the boat. Reviewers stress choosing the right option after picking your time, as only one includes swimming.

Is a swim with the whales guaranteed?

No. The operator says whales are never guaranteed, and each swim depends on the sea state, the whales' behavior, the guide's assessment and the rules that day. The captain and guide make the final decision.

Do I have to wear a life jacket?

Swimmers must wear the buoyancy vest the operator provides, without exception, unless they wear a 3 mm neoprene wetsuit, short or long, which counts as flotation. Wetsuits are not included, so bring your own if you prefer one.

Can children come?

Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The listing sets no minimum age, but swimmers must be in good physical condition and able to swim properly, so younger children are better suited to the observer option.

What is the cancellation policy?

Viator lists free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. The operator's own terms on the listing ask for cancellations 72 hours ahead and give no refund for late cancellations or no-shows, so read both before booking. Weather cancellations by the operator are offered a new date or a refund.

Where do we meet?

In the parking lot of Coco Beach restaurant on Moorea's north coast. Tours start at 8:00 am and 1:30 pm, and the operator asks you to arrive 10 minutes early. Transport is not included.
