Moorea Half-Day Whale Tour (Moorea Activities Center)

4.6 (211 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Moorea Activities Center runs this four-hour humpback whale tour, which holds a 4.6 rating from 211 reviews. At $182 per person it is one of the lower-priced Moorea whale tours on this site that include the chance to swim.

The base sits on the sea side of the road, with a car park marked by a Moorea Activities Center sign on the mountain side opposite, and pickup can be added as an option when you book. From there the boat heads out beyond the reef. The crew carries a hydrophone, so you can listen to humpback song from the boat even when no whale is at the surface.

The operator is clear that a swim is not guaranteed: the whales' behavior, the weather and the other conditions all have to line up before the guide allows guests in the water, and the whales' welfare and guest safety come first. When it does happen, reviewers describe swimming with mothers and calves. One swimmer warns that you may need to cover up to about 100 yards (90 m) of open ocean with wind and swell, and that the group returns to the boat together if someone cannot keep up.

The minimum age is 5 to come aboard and 12 to swim, and infants sit on an adult's lap, so it works for families where the younger children watch from the boat. The listing asks for at least a moderate level of fitness and advises against the trip for pregnant travelers and those with poor cardiovascular health. One 2-star reviewer reported 11 guests on board, split into two swim groups because only six can be in the water at a time; if a small boat matters to you, the six-guest tours on this site suit you better.

Masks, snorkels, fins and drinks are included; lunch and gratuities are not. Viator offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time.

What Travelers Say

It was an amazing experience. We got to see the whales and swim close to them. For sure an unforgettable trip! Also the team, captain Mahai and Frank were very professional and helped us throughout the tour. Really recommend!

You need to be an extremely strong swimmer. You will be swimming up to 100 yards in open ocean with wind, waves and large swells. I did see 2 whales, (after almost drowning). If you cannot make it then the entire group must return to the boat. So don't ruin it for others. If you are not sure of your swimming ability skip this tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a swim with the whales guaranteed?

No. The operator says the swim depends on the whales' behavior, the weather and other conditions, and the guide only allows it when everything lines up. Whale welfare and guest safety come first.

Can children come?

Yes, from age 5 on board, and from age 12 in the water. Infants sit on an adult's lap. Younger children watch from the boat while older family members swim.

How strong a swimmer do I need to be?

The listing asks for at least a moderate level of fitness, but reviewers are more direct: one describes swimming up to about 100 yards in open ocean with wind and swell. If you are unsure of your swimming, plan to watch from the boat.

How many people are on the boat?

The listing does not state a boat capacity. One reviewer reported 11 guests, split into two groups because only six guests can be in the water at once. If you want a smaller group, the six-guest tours on this site cap numbers.

What is the hydrophone for?

It is an underwater microphone that lets you hear humpback song from the boat. Singing whales can be below the surface for long stretches, so you may hear them before you see them.

What happens if the weather is bad or the whales do not show?

Trips outside the reef depend on the sea state, and the operator can cancel on rough days. If that happens you are offered another date or a full refund, and you can cancel yourself for free up to 24 hours before the start. There is no refund if the trip runs and the whales stay out of reach, because sightings are never guaranteed.
