Moorea Glass-Bottom Boat Tour with Motu Lunch

About This Experience

Captain Taina is a Moorea family business that has run lagoon trips for more than 20 years. You go out on the Honu Kea, a small glass-bottom boat with shade and a ladder at the back, so anyone who doesn't want to swim can watch the reef through the glass panels while the others snorkel with the guide. The listed start point is Captain Taina's base at PK 26.7 in the Maiau area of Moorea.

The first stop is a turtle area the family calls a sanctuary, home to around 20 green turtles, including one named Ohure Pio that Taina once rescued. You may also see coral, reef fish and eagle rays. Next come tiki sculptures placed on the lagoon floor, then a sandbar where you swim among grey stingrays and blacktip reef sharks. Guests describe snorkeling while holding a rope behind the boat, which keeps children and nervous swimmers relaxed, and full-face masks for kids.

Lunch is on the family's private motu: a taste of local rum, a lesson in making Tahitian raw fish with coconut milk, chicken kebabs, grilled fish depending on the day's catch, and seasonal fruit. Afterward you can rest in the shade or snorkel the coral garden around the islet. One family reported a trip of about 5.5 hours and would have liked more time at the ray and shark stop and less on the motu.

This is a lagoon trip, not a whale tour. Outside whale season, or on a day off the ocean, the turtles, rays and reef sharks are the lagoon's main attractions, and the glass panels let non-swimmers in your group see them too. Transfers are not part of the price; one guest paid $20 per person for one.

Prices start from $162 per person, lunch included, with a 4.9 rating from 86 reviews. You can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.9/5 by 86 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

This was such a great day. The staff were lovely. A complimentary espresso to start the day and at the end of the day they got us back to our ferry back to Tahiti just in time. In between our glass bottom boat captain manoeuvred us expertly around the lagoon and beyond the reef, showing us green turtles, coral beds, colourful fish, small sharks and stingrays. Our guide, Kenai, was very informative and helpful to first time snorkellers. And, a highlight was a Tahitian lunch on their private island. Well done to all the Captain Teina crew.

We enjoyed our 5.5h tour (2 adults/2 kids). Positives: Service: Very proactive communication regarding transfers and allergies (great lunch alternative provided). Gear: Free snorkeling equipment, including full-face masks for the kids. Guides: Very friendly; although the group was mostly French, they translated everything into English. Turtle Stop: The "lazy snorkeling" on a rope was fantastic and stress-free for the whole family. Room for Improvement: Transfer: $20/person for 5km felt steep; we found a local option for $15 for all of us. Timing: We spent 1h+ at the first stop and 30min at the Tikis, but only 15min at the highlight (stingrays & sharks). We’d prefer more time there. Lunch: The private island stay (2h) felt a bit long; more snorkeling time would be better. Friendly team and great for families, but adjusting the itinerary to focus on the rays/sharks would make it 5 stars!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can non-swimmers join?

Yes. The boat has glass panels in the hull, so non-swimmers can watch the turtles, fish and rays from inside while swimmers snorkel with the guide.

What is served for lunch?

Tahitian raw fish with coconut milk, which you learn to make, chicken kebabs, grilled fish depending on what local fishermen caught, and seasonal fruit, after a taste of local rum. Guests with allergies report being given an alternative.

Can I do this as a day trip from Tahiti?

One guest did and says the crew got them back in time for their ferry to Tahiti, but it was close. Check the tour's return time against your ferry before booking.

Are transfers included?

No. Transfers can be arranged for an extra charge; one guest paid $20 per person and found a cheaper local option.

Will we see whales?

This is a lagoon trip, so whales are not part of it. For humpbacks, book a licensed whale tour between 20 July and 20 November.
