Is whale watching better in Tahiti or Moorea?
Tahiti and Moorea share the same whales, channel and rules. Compare boats, prices and ferry logistics, and pick by where you are staying.
Neither island has better whales. Tahiti and Moorea face each other across the same channel, the humpbacks move between them, and the same rules and season apply to both. Moorea has more boats, more small-group trips and more choice between watching and swimming, so it wins if you are staying there or have a spare day for the ferry. Tahiti wins if you are staying on Tahiti and want to skip the crossing. The simplest rule is to go whale watching from the island you are sleeping on.
On this site that means 15 Moorea whale tours, such as the six-guest Mori Ora half day from Opunohu Bay (5.0 from 49 reviews, from $260 per person), against three departures from Tahiti.

Same whales, same rules
Moorea sits about 17 kilometers (10 nautical miles) northwest of Tahiti. The channel between them is where both islands’ whale boats go looking. Tahiti’s west coast around Punaauia looks straight across it at Moorea.
The research record backs this up. In research surveys from 1997 to 2002, Tahiti’s west coast logged 35 humpback sightings and Moorea 34, far more than Tahiti’s south, north or east coasts. The Windward Islands group, which includes both, had the highest sighting rate in French Polynesia.
The rules are the same on both islands. Tours run only from July 20 to November 20, between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Licensed boats stay 100 meters from a whale, swimmers 15 meters, and no more than seven people per boat go in the water, guide included. Watching and swimming happen only in the open ocean.
Where Moorea has the edge
More choice. Moorea had more licensed whale operators than Tahiti in 2025, reportedly 46 against 31, and that shows in what you can book. The Moorea tours on this site run from $144 to $393 per person, with watch-only boats, watch-or-swim boats, strict six-guest boats and two private charters. Our guide to choosing a Moorea whale tour compares all 15.
Short runs to open water. Moorea’s reef has 12 passes, and whales are often seen near them, so boats from the north coast bays reach whale water quickly. The Mori Ora trip leaves from the small marina at the head of Opunohu Bay with six people on board, snacks and water included (our breakdown). The Moorea Sea Experience small-group trip leaves from Cook’s Bay, next door.
Where Tahiti has the edge
No ferry, and the lowest price on the site. Tahiti boats leave from central Papeete and from Marina Taina in Punaauia, so a Tahiti hotel guest can be on the water within a short drive. These are the three Tahiti departures on this site:
| Tour | From | Rating (reviews) | Leaves from | Notes from the listing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Explorer Tahiti small group | $226 pp | 4.8 (93) | Paofai Gardens pontoon, Papeete | 6 guests max; wetsuits included; swimmers 15+ |
| Tahiti Ocean Explorer, 4 hours | $121 pp | 4.8 (42) | Marina Taina, Punaauia | Naturalist guides, hydrophone, in-water option |
| Tahiti by Boat whale tour | $219 pp | 4.0 (89) | Hotel pickup for groups of 4 or more | Up to 12 passengers; may enter the water if conditions allow |
The Tahiti Ocean Explorer trip at $121 is the lowest-priced whale tour on this site. Wild Explorer Tahiti is also sold on GetYourGuide at $222. Read our breakdowns of Wild Explorer Tahiti, Tahiti Ocean Explorer and Tahiti by Boat, or see the whale watching Tahiti page.
Getting from Tahiti to Moorea for a whale tour
Ferries run from the Papeete waterfront to Vaiare on Moorea’s east coast. The line is now served by Aremiti (Aremiti 5 and Aremiti 6), Vaeara’i and Tauati Ferry. The crossing takes about 25 to 45 minutes depending on the ship: Aremiti 6 is the quickest at about 25 minutes. Each company runs several sailings a day from early morning to evening; moorea.life lists the timetables for all of them on one page. On Viator, a Vaeara’i ferry ticket starts at $18 per person for a crossing the operator gives as 45 minutes. Air Tahiti and Air Moana also fly to Moorea’s airport at Temae, a hop of about 10 to 15 minutes.
The catch is timing. Morning whale boats leave early (Enjoy Boat Tours at 8:00 a.m., for example), and most leave from the north or west coast, a drive or taxi ride from Vaiare. A day trip works best with an afternoon whale trip after a morning ferry, or with a boat near the port. The Native Mozcean watch-or-swim trip leaves from the marina at Vaiare, the ferry port, from $180 per person (our breakdown). If you are planning more than one day on Moorea, cross the day before and book a morning boat.
Which to choose, by where you are staying
- Central Papeete: Wild Explorer Tahiti from the Paofai Gardens pontoon, or an early ferry to Moorea if you want more choice.
- Punaauia and the west coast of Tahiti: Tahiti Ocean Explorer from Marina Taina.
- Elsewhere on Tahiti with three or more friends: Tahiti by Boat, which picks up groups of four or more from several hotels.
- North coast of Moorea, around Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay: Moorea Sea Experience or Mori Ora, both close by.
- Northwest Moorea, around Papetoai, Tiahura and Hauru: private boats such as Tama Tours can meet you at Papetoai or Tiahura, and Ariki Tours can pick up by boat from some hotels.
- Arriving by ferry for the day: Native Mozcean from Vaiare, with an afternoon slot if you can.
Which is better overall, Tahiti or Moorea?
For whales, the island you stay on. For a trip built around the ocean, Moorea is the easier base. It is a smaller island of about 18,000 people with a 60-kilometer coast road, two deep bays on its north shore and a lagoon full of snorkeling, while Tahiti is the gateway, with the international airport and the capital. A common plan is to do both: arrive on Tahiti, cross to Moorea for a few days, and book the whale trip there.
