"Best tour and guide (Mana). Fantastic fantastic fantastic. I’d recommend in a heartbeat! This operation has its stuff together - small boat (6passengers) with 2 experienced and knowledgeable crew. However would recommend being in fairly good shape and being a good swimmer."

How Booking Works
From this page to the boat in four steps.
Pick Swim or Watch
Most Moorea whale tours are half-day boats that look for humpbacks outside the reef and let you swim with them when the guide judges it safe. A few are watch-only, and some are private charters. The comparison below lays them out.
Book a Date in Season
Whale tours can legally run from 20 July to 20 November. Pick a date in the calendar; most listings can be cancelled up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund.
Meet the Boat
Your confirmation names the meeting point. Most Moorea boats leave from Cook's Bay or the north-coast beaches, and a few offer hotel pickup. Arrive 15 minutes early.
Bring Swimwear and a Mask
Snorkel gear is usually provided, but a mask that fits you helps. Swimmers wear a life jacket or a wetsuit, and a sun layer and seasickness tablets are worth packing.
Before You Book
A Whale Tour Is a Search, Not a Route
Nobody knows where the whales will be when the boat leaves. The four hours are spent looking, and the swim, if it happens, is a few minutes the guide decides on. This is how a typical Moorea morning goes.
- 7:30–8:00 am — meet at the landing — Most boats leave from Cook's Bay or the north-coast beaches near Coco Beach; a few offer hotel pickup. Your confirmation names the spot. Take seasickness tablets before you board.
- Briefing and gear — The guide explains the approach rules and how to enter the water quietly. You get mask, snorkel and fins; operators ask for a life jacket unless you wear a wetsuit.
- Out through the pass to the open ocean — Watching and swimming are banned inside the lagoon, the bays and the passes, so every tour heads outside the reef, where the swell starts.
- The search — The crew scans for blows and tail slaps and talks to other boats. Licensed boats stay 100 meters from a whale, and no more than three may be within 300 meters of it.
- The swim, if the whale allows it — When a whale is resting calmly and the sea is safe, up to six guests and the guide slip in and hold at least 15 meters away. If the whale is travelling or the sea is rough, you watch from the boat.
- Back inside the reef — Some trips finish with a snorkel stop in the lagoon, and some end early once everyone has had a good swim. Expect to be back about four hours after you left.

The Short Version
How to Choose a Moorea Whale Tour
Most boats do the same thing. The group size, the swim and the price are what differ.
Between late July and November, humpback whales spend the southern winter around Moorea, and a few dozen small boats go out through the reef passes each morning and afternoon to find them. Almost every tour on the island follows the same pattern: about four hours on the open ocean, a guide watching for blows and tail slaps, and, when the whale’s behavior and the sea allow it, a chance to slip into the water with mask and fins. What separates one tour from the next is how many people share the boat, whether you want to swim at all, where the boat leaves from, and what you are prepared to pay.
Why the whales are here
The humpbacks that winter in French Polynesia spend the southern summer feeding on krill near Antarctica, then swim north to breed, give birth and nurse their calves in warm water close to the reefs. They do not feed while they are here. Mothers look for sheltered water near the barrier reef, which is why the passes on Moorea’s north and west coasts are good places to look, and why a calf lying beside its mother just below the surface is the scene most people hope for. The males sing, and on some boats you can hear them through a hydrophone before you see anything.
These whales belong to the Oceania population, which the IUCN lists as endangered even though humpbacks as a species are doing far better. French Polynesia made its whole ocean territory a marine mammal sanctuary in 2002, and the rules for tours are strict.
The rules that shape every tour
Whale tours, watching and swimming alike, can only run from 20 July to 20 November, between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm, and only on the open ocean: never inside the lagoon, the bays or the passes. Since December 2024 licensed boats must stay 100 meters from a whale, no more than three boats may be within 300 meters of the same animal, and swimmers must stay at least 15 meters away. No more than seven people may be in the water from one boat, guide included, which is why so many listings cap swimmers at six.
That last rule matters when you choose. On a large boat, swimmers take turns. On a boat that carries six guests, everyone can go in together.
The one we would book first
Our top pick is the half-day small-group trip with Moorea Sea Experience: four hours from the public landing in Cook’s Bay, a boat that takes a maximum of six guests with a captain and a guide, and a 5.0 rating from 113 reviews at $254 per person. It is the highest-rated whale tour on this site with more than 100 reviews, and reviewers keep coming back to the same points: two crew, a small group and swims that happen when conditions are right. Our full breakdown covers the meeting point and what to bring.
If you want to swim
Swimming is what makes Moorea different from most whale-watching destinations, and it is what most of these tours are built around. The Enjoy Boat Tours trip is the most-reviewed Moorea whale tour on this site (4.9 from 327 reviews) and the cheapest one that includes a swim, from $179, with separate places for swimmers and for observers who stay on board. Moorea Expedition, a local team running trips since 1984, is sold on both Viator and GetYourGuide and offers hotel pickup. Our swim with whales page compares the swim-focused boats side by side, and how to swim with whales in Moorea explains the briefing, the fitness you need and what happens in the water.
You do need to be a confident swimmer. The guide decides who goes in and when, the water is open ocean with swell, and several operators ask guests to swim around 100 meters to reach a good position. A swim is never guaranteed, even on a day with whales in sight.
If you would rather watch from the boat
Not everyone wants to get in, and you do not have to. Most swim tours let you stay aboard, and Moorea Expedition sells a separate watch-only trip from $144, the cheapest Moorea whale tour here. It is also the lowest rated (3.8 from 21 reviews), mostly from guests who expected more time close to the whales, so read what it covers before booking.
Private boats
If you are a family or a group of friends, a private charter puts the pace and the swim decisions in your hands. They are priced per boat, not per person: the Aimeho Private Escapes charter is from $1,269 for up to six people, roughly $212 each when the boat is full. The private whale watching page compares the options and the per-head math.
Staying on Tahiti?
The same humpbacks swim the channel between the two islands, and Tahiti’s west coast sees about as many whales as Moorea. If you are based in Papeete, a Tahiti boat saves you the 25 to 45 minute ferry each way. Whale watching in Tahiti lists the departures, and Tahiti or Moorea helps you decide.
When to go
Any date in the legal window can work. Late July and August bring the first arrivals and a lot of singing males; September and October are the months most operators recommend for mothers with young calves; November is still open until the 20th, but the whales thin out as they start their journey south. Mornings are usually calmer at sea, since the trade winds tend to build during the day. The best time to see whales guide goes month by month, and what a whale swim costs lays out the price ladder.
Still undecided? Which Moorea whale watching tour is right for you matches each boat to a type of traveler. And if you are here outside whale season, the lagoon still has turtles, rays, reef sharks and spinner dolphins: see Moorea snorkeling tours.

"An incredible whale-watching experience! Our guide knew exactly where to position the boat and where to wait. We had two swims, and both times the whales came right next to us! Absolutely breathtaking and one of the most unforgettable experiences of our trip. Highly recommended!"
"We got to swim with an entire family of whales (mama, calf, and dad), not once but twice! It was truly a life changing experience! The crew was super knowledgeable."
"What a wonderful experience. Mana and his team were very professional and so friendly and accommodating, helping those of us who were less experienced in the open ocean."
"Incredible experience with knowledgeable helpful tour guide. We quickly found whales and were able to swim with them for over an hour! Would recommend taking motion sickness medication beforehand. Highly recommend this tour!!"
"This small group tour was nice. We saw other boats with 12 people and it looked so crowded and chaotic when they got in to the water. Our guide, Johnny was great. He was patient and gave clear instructions."
"The trip was amazing! Be sure to take motion sickness medicine before though because people on our boat missed out due to sea sickness."

Moorea Whale Watching FAQ
The questions people ask before they book, answered from the rules and the operators' own listings.
Yes. French Polynesia is one of the few places where licensed operators may put guests in the water with humpback whales, between 20 July and 20 November, on the open ocean outside the reef. The guide decides when and whether it is safe, and a swim is never guaranteed. How a whale swim works.
Humpbacks are around Moorea from about July to November, and some arrive earlier or stay later. Tours are only allowed from 20 July to 20 November, so that is the season that matters for booking. Season guide, month by month.
Most operators point to September and October, when mothers with young calves are most often seen, while August is known for singing males and courtship groups. Any date between 20 July and 20 November can work, and the first weeks of November are quieter. Mornings are usually calmer at sea. Best time to see whales in Moorea.
Only from 20 July to 20 November. That is the legal window for every whale tour in French Polynesia, whether you swim or stay on the boat, and tours run between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm. The rules in full.
On this site, shared half-day tours with a chance to swim start at $179 per person (Enjoy Boat Tours) and most sit between about $180 and $300. A watch-only boat is from $144, and private charters are priced per boat, from $1,269 for up to six people. Every price, compared.
It is safe for confident swimmers who follow the guide. The rules keep swimmers at least 15 meters from a whale and boats 100 meters away, and a certified guide leads every entry. The real risks are the open ocean itself: swell, current and seasickness. Safety and fitness.
Licensed swims are legal and tightly regulated: no chasing, no blocking a mother and calf, no entering the water inside the lagoon or passes, and no more than three boats near one whale. Choosing a small-group, licensed operator keeps the pressure on the animals low. What the rules require.
You book a licensed tour. After a briefing, the boat searches outside the reef; when the guide judges the whale calm and the sea safe, you slip in quietly with mask, snorkel and fins and swim to a position the guide chooses. Operators require a life jacket unless you wear a wetsuit. Step by step.
Mornings are usually calmer, because the trade winds tend to build through the day, which matters on a small boat outside the reef. Whales are around at both times, and many operators run a morning and an afternoon trip. How to choose a tour.
The whales are the same and the rules are the same. Moorea reportedly has more licensed boats, and short runs to open water from its passes; Tahiti saves you the ferry if you are staying in Papeete. Tahiti or Moorea for whale watching.
Yes. Several licensed boats leave from Papeete and the west coast of Tahiti, including Wild Explorer Tahiti from the Paofai Gardens pontoon in Papeete (4.8 from 93 reviews, from $226 per person). Tahiti whale watching tours.
Almost all of them are about four hours, including the run out through the reef and back, and some finish early once a good swim has happened. Private full-day charters exist but are rare. Compare the tours.
